Canada’s Fastest Growing Tech Firms Smash Prior Records to Take Top Spots in 2000 Canadian Technology Fast 50

Dramatic growth also drives stellar performances by prior winners

Toronto, September 28, 2000 Pivotal Corporation and Stratos Global Corporation took top honours last night when Deloitte & Touche announced its annual ranking of the 2000 Canadian Technology Fast 50 at a gala reception in Montreal.  Vancouver-based Pivotal reported tremendous growth in revenues from 1995 to 1999 of 34,548% to secure the No. 1 ranking, well up from its No. 14 spot in 1999. First time recipient, Toronto-based Stratos placed second with 27,560%.

“Pivotal and Stratos hit it out of the Canadian Technology Fast 50 ballpark with their phenomenal growth rates,” said Garry Foster, National Director, High Technology and Telecom, Deloitte & Touche.  “It appears that Canada’s fast-growing companies are getting exponentially faster and we can expect more of the same in the future, in an industry where anything can happen.”

“We are extremely honoured to receive this recognition among such esteemed industry peers,” said Norm Francis, president and CEO of Pivotal Corporation in accepting the award last night. “This growth has been a secondary effect of our singular focus upon delivering leading eBusiness solutions, ensuring highly satisfied customers and maintaining a great work environment.”

Rounding out the top 10 companies are Wavesat Telecom (PQ with 13837%), Genesis Microchip (Ont., 7785% ), COGNICASE Inc. (PQ, 5312%), Shop 9000 Sales (Ont., 5107%), 01 Communique Laboratory (Ont., 4690%), Open Text (Ont., 3987%), Bridges.com (B.C., 3158%) and DataMirror (Ont. 3075%).

Repeat fast-growth performances by Canada’s high tech firms also dominate this year’s rankings.  Twenty-seven (54%) of the 2000 Canadian Technology Fast 50 recipients also placed in the 1999 rankings and 14 (28%) have placed each year since the program’s inception in 1998.

“The ability of the Canadian Technology Fast 50 companies to achieve and sustain such dramatic growth attest to their vision and determination to succeed,” said Foster. “These companies have worked hard and run fast to compete in some very aggressive market sectors that have enjoyed and should continue to enjoy explosive growth in the future.”

Many of the Canadian Technology Fast 50 recipients operate in very dynamic sectors that have rewarded them with dynamic growth, helping them achieve leading competitive positions in global markets.  For some, growth has been achieved through acquisitions and consolidation while others are growing organically.

Now in its third year, the Deloitte & Touche Canadian Technology Fast 50 recognizes the tremendous revenue growth and achievement of the companies that are driving the booming technology market and boosting Canada’s economy. The annual program ranks the 50 fastest-growing technology companies based on the highest rates of revenue growth during the last five years (1995 to 1999).

For the first time, the 2000 Canadian Technology Fast 50 program introduced a new category, “Shooting Stars”, to recognise technology companies that are experiencing rapid growth who have been in business for a minimum of three years, and who began earning revenues in excess of $75,000 after 1997. InfoInterActive Inc., an application service provider based in Bedford, N.S. took the top spot recording 9,158% growth in revenues from 1997 to 1999.  Vancouver-based Uniglobe.com Inc., an online travel services company, placed second with 8,825% followed by software firm Big Picture Technologies of Calgary with 1,924%.

This year, recipients of the Canadian Technology Fast 50 are automatically eligible for the Technology Fast 500 for the first time. The Technology Fast 500 will rank the fast growing U.S. and Canadian technology companies and winners will be published in the November 27, 200 issue of Forbes ASAP.
